Citizens seek responsible policing, not displays of authority, says Judge Sabbir Faiz

He says the public must not only see criminals brought to justice, but also receive clear and timely information that justice is being done

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sabbir Faiz has said people expect the police to fulfil their responsibilities, not showcase their authority.

Addressing police officers on Saturday, he said the public is eager to appreciate their work.

All they want, he said, is “sincere behaviour, cooperation and duties performed with a welcoming attitude”.

Speaking at a police–magistracy conference, he said investigations into many significant and high-profile cases were progressing and that rapid disposals were being achieved. But, he added, these developments often do not reach the wider public.

He stressed that regardless of who the offender is, justice must be ensured and citizens must be informed about it.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman said police and magistrates faced numerous challenges after the July Uprising, though conditions had since improved considerably.

He addressed recent concerns, including the shooting death of a man near the court premises shortly after he had appeared before the court.

Such incidents, he warned, undermine the sense of security for litigants, judges and lawyers, and risk disrupting the administration of justice.

Calling for thorough investigations into the July shooting cases, he said Section 173-A, recently added to the Code of Criminal Procedure, was introduced with good intentions but was being misused in some instances.

He urged police to act cautiously and responsibly.
