A delegation from Jamaat-e-Islami has sat down for talks with the Election Commission amid preparations to announce the schedule of the 13th parliamentary election and the planned national referendum, expected to take place simultaneously in early February next year.
The meeting began around 11:30am on Monday at the EC headquarters in Dhaka's Agargaon.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin is chairing the session, with other election commissioners also in attendance.
Jamaat’s six-strong contingent is being led by the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar.
The EC is expected to finalise the timetable for the polls and referendum in the coming days, with the announcement due after its meeting with President Md Shahabuddin on Dec 10.
The meeting comes a week after delegations from the BNP and the National Citizen Party (NCP) held separate talks with the chief election commissioner.
Earlier on Monday morning, representatives of the Bangladesh Administration Association also met the CEC as part of ongoing consultations before the EC finalises the election timetable.
On Sunday, the commission held talks with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, briefing him on preparations for holding the parliamentary election and referendum on the same day in February. EC officials told the interim government chief that the commission was “fully prepared” for the vote.
The CEC and other commissioners thanked the chief advisor for his cooperation and said that citizens were already engaging with the electoral process, helping create what they described as an “election atmosphere” in the country.
Before meeting Yunus, the commission held its regular session on Sunday morning. After the meeting, Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said voting hours would be extended by one hour for the upcoming polls, with 30 minutes being added at the start and end of the day.
He also said the election schedule would be announced on any day between Dec 8-15.
