Villagers in Narayanganj’s Araihazar Upazila have “beaten another man to death”, after previously killing a suspect in eight cases and a Union Council member.
The man was lynched after being accused of taking part in a robbery attempt, police said.
According to Tarek Al Mehedi, additional superintendent of police, the incident occurred in Bishnandi Union in the early hours of Wednesday.
The deceased, identified as 32-year-old Nabi Hossain, was the son of Laikka Hossain from Uchitpura Union. Police said there was no record of criminal activity against him.
Citing local accounts, Mehedi said several men attempted to rob a house in the village, attacking and injuring at least four people inside.
The injured were identified as Kulsum Begum, 40, her son Naeem Mia, 18, and their relatives, Faruk Mia, 45, and Abul Hossain, 28. Kulsum was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment following the incident.
“Later, when an announcement was made on the loudspeaker of the local mosque that robbers had entered the village, the villagers chased the robbers and caught one of them,” Mehedi said.
“He was beaten to death by the villagers.”
Md Saifuddin, inspector (investigation) at Araihazar Police Station, said the robbery attempt began around 2:30am, when Kulsum went outside to check on an earthen stove amid the heavy rain.
When she entered the kitchen, she saw three or four men in the kitchen area and began shouting, “Robbers, robbers!”
The intruders then attacked family members as they rushed to respond, he said.
Following the mosque announcement, villagers searched the surrounding areas and found Nabi in a nearby marsh.
He was beaten severely before police recovered his body.
His remains were sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy, Saifuddin said, adding that legal action would follow.
The killing is the third such incident in Araihazar Upazila in the past month.
On Monday, Md Sohel, a member of Ward No. 3 of Brahmandi Union Parishad, was tied up and beaten to death after being accused of extortion.
Sohel’s relatives denied the allegation, insisting he was targeted for opposing local drug traders.
Police said he had at least 15 cases against him, including accusations of drug dealing, robbery and extortion.
He was previously arrested in June during a RAB-11 raid in Cumilla but later released on bail.
Earlier, on Sept 8, Md Aynal Hossain, 42, was beaten to death near his home in Brahmandi Union.
Police said Aynal was accused in at least eight cases, including allegations of robbery and rape.
