Leaders of Inqilab Moncho have announced an “all-out” blockade in divisional cities across Bangladesh, demanding the arrest and trial of those involved in the killing of their leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi.
The announcement came on Saturday night through a post on the platform’s verified Facebook page.
The post said the blockade would begin at 11am on Sunday in divisional cities, calling for swift arrests and justice for “Shaheed”, or martyred, Osman Hadi.
About an hour later, the platform revised the plan. In a fresh Facebook post, it said the blockade announced for the remaining hours of Saturday night had been suspended.
The post also said no one would be allowed to remain at the Shahbagh protest site overnight.
“[On Sunday], after reviewing the press conference by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner, the blockade will continue from 2pm across Dhaka and seven other divisional cities,” it read.
Inqilab Moncho leaders and activists have been blocking Shahbagh intersection in the capital for two days.
They have also been enforcing a blockade at Chattogram’s New Market intersection since the afternoon.
Although leaders earlier announced they would continue the Shahbagh sit-in overnight, the decision was later withdrawn.
Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan visited the protest site on Saturday night.
During the protest, demonstrators shouted a series of slogans, including: “Compromise or revolution, revolution, revolution”; “We will all become Hadi, the struggle will go on”; “Not Shahbagh, justice, justice”; “This country is ours, Bangladesh”; “We want justice, justice for Hadi’s murder”; “Hadi belongs to the people, Hadi never dies”; “Freedom of Bangladesh, Osman Hadi”; and “The era of civility is over, justice for Bangladesh”.
