United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has reiterated the UN's commitment to mobilising the international community in support of Bangladesh as it continues to host Myanmar's forcibly-displaced Rohingya people.
In a letter to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, Guterres acknowledged Bangladesh’s concerns about the impact of the Rohingya crisis on the country and the broader region, as well as the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, according to state news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.
Yunus received the letter on Tuesday. Guterres assured that the UN, through his special envoy for Myanmar, will continue working closely with regional partners, ASEAN, and other relevant stakeholders to create a conducive environment for the safe and voluntary repatriation of the Rohingya refugees and to seek a political resolution to Myanmar’s crisis.
He also mentioned that UN personnel in both Bangladesh and Myanmar have been directed to strengthen humanitarian aid and livelihood support for the Rohingya.
The UN chief stressed that the Rohingya issue remains a top priority for the organisation and that efforts will continue to ensure the delivery of emergency relief and humanitarian assistance.
Guterres expressed hope that a high-level conference on the Rohingya and other marginalised communities in Myanmar would bring renewed global attention to the crisis and help advance a solution.
"We await the agreed outcomes and plans for the conference, following Member State consultations, to understand how the United Nations system can best support the process," he said.
He reiterated the UN’s support for the ongoing “transformation process” in Bangladesh under the leadership of Yunus.
Guterres also thanked Yunus for his letter sent on Feb 4, which extended an invitation for him to visit Bangladesh. The letter was delivered by chief advisor’s High Representative for Rohingya Crisis and Priorities Affairs Khalilur Rahman.
The UN chief is set to visit Bangladesh for a four-day trip from Mar 13-16.
