The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast several cold waves in the first month of the new year.
So January, 2025 will be colder than other years, said Meteorologist Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik.
“At least one to three mild to moderate cold waves and one to two intense cold waves are likely to sweep through the country in January,” Mallick told bdnews24.com.
“Though the temperature will start dropping today, the weather will be chilly in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Sylhet divisions from Wednesday. It may gradually spread to the eastern region of the country through the central region.”
This time the western part of the country is likely to experience scattered cold waves, Mallick said, adding it might continue until Friday.
The meteorologist also forecast the expansion of fog in the next few days.
“Effects of the northern chilly wind may intensify. Sharp cold weather will be felt throughout the month.”
A cold wave is said to occur when the temperature is at or below 10 degrees Celsius. If the mercury hits between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius, it indicates a mild cold wave. When the mercury drops below 6 degrees Celsius, it is assumed to be a severe cold wave.
LOWEST TEMPERATURE 10.9 DEGREES IN TENTULIA
Panchagarh’s Tentulia recorded the country's lowest temperature at 10.9 degrees Celsius in the 24 hours to 6am on Tuesday.
In contrast, Cox’s Bazar and Sitakunda in Chattogram reported the highest temperature at 30.5 degrees Celsius over the same period.
The regular weather bulletin indicates that day and night temperatures may slightly decrease nationwide over the 24 hours from 9am on Tuesday.
Dense fog may make it feel even colder.
Moderate to dense fog is likely in the northern part of the country from midnight to afternoon, while light to moderate fog is expected in other parts from midnight to morning.
Heavy fog may temporarily disrupt flight operations, river transport and road transport, the BMD bulletin said.
