In his first televised speech, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has promised every Bangladeshi they will enjoy equal rights under his government, regardless of whether they voted for the BNP, another party, or did not vote at all.
Upon completing his first day in office on Wednesday, Tarique outlined government priorities and issued clear, specific messages in the evening.
“The BNP government believes that the state belongs to all, regardless of political affiliation, faith, or philosophy. Every Bangladeshi citizen, whether yours, mine, or ours, will have equal rights in this country,” he said.
On peace and law enforcement, he said: “Improving the law and order situation and bringing people peace and security through strict control of corruption is the government’s foremost priority,” he said.
He emphasised that all constitutional, public, and private institutions will operate under established laws, not political pressure or partisan influence.
“The rule of law will be the final authority in state governance,” he added.
Identifying gambling and drugs as key causes of lawlessness, Tarique pledged stringent action by law enforcement to curb these issues.
“The government will take the highest measures to ensure public safety and peace,” he said.
Ramadan and Price Control
With Ramadan beginning on Thursday, Tarique extended greetings to the nation.
“Ramadan is a month of self-purification. This period should not increase public hardship, though there is a worrying tendency for profit-driven practices during this month,” he said.
Addressing traders, he warned: “Do not treat Ramadan as a month for profit. Ensure essential goods remain affordable. Our government has taken responsibility to dismantle all syndicates that exploit citizens’ rights.
“Measures will protect both sellers and buyers, and we are ready to receive suggestions or complaints to ensure market fairness.”
Highlighting essential services during Ramadan, Tarique instructed the uninterrupted supply of gas, electricity, and water for Iftar, Taraweeh, and Sehri.
“Preventing waste and exercising frugality is every Muslim’s duty. Conscious use of utilities is part of worship,” he said.
To lead by example, the government has decided that no BNP MP will import tax-free vehicles or claim plot benefits.
“Our parliamentary decisions reflect the Prophet’s (S) ideals of justice,” he added.
Addressing urban congestion, he outlined plans to ease population pressures in cities through enhanced rail connectivity.
“We are reorganising the rail, road, and bridge ministries to ensure accessible, affordable, and safe transport nationwide. This will reduce urban dependency and improve the environment,” he said.
Employment and Youth Development
Tarique highlighted the need to transform the country’s population into a skilled workforce.
“If we equip ourselves with knowledge and skills, Bangladesh will be ready for the global market. In the era of artificial intelligence, every citizen must excel in a field to thrive with dignity and stability.
“Our government is committed to providing all support to students and youth to build competence, create jobs, and ensure a productive work environment.”
After his return from more than 17 years in self-imposed exile, Tarique reminded the nation: “I have a plan.”
Before the Feb 12 national elections, he had outlined aspects of this plan across the country.
“The people entrusted us with state governance and the opportunity to implement our plan. We have begun fulfilling that commitment, and we seek the nation’s continued support on this journey.”
Opening his speech, Tarique invoked the sacrifice of countless martyrs, saying: “Through their lives, we obtained independence and sovereignty. Now, a government accountable to the people has begun its journey.
“Democracy and citizens’ rights are being restored thanks to the will of freedom-loving people.”
He emphasised inclusivity: “Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, people in hills or plains -- this country belongs to all of us. Our aim is to make this land safe and secure for every citizen.
“Establishing a self-reliant, secure, humane, and democratic Bangladesh is the BNP government’s goal.”
