Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said 4,000 assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) will be recruited into the force before the national election.
The IGP disclosed the plan after a meeting at the public administration ministry in Dhaka’s Secretariat on Wednesday, where he discussed amendments to recruitment regulations to accelerate the process.
“We will appoint 4,000 ASIs. Of that, 50 percent will be through direct recruitment, while the remaining 50 percent will be through promotion,” he said.
“Some minor changes to the regulations were necessary. The public administration ministry is taking care of them, which is making the recruitment process smoother.”
Asked when the recruitment would be completed, Baharul said: “We want to complete it as early as possible. The chief advisor has recently given policy-level approval for recruitment to several forces, and we’re now working on those.”
The ministry’s Senior Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman said the IGP and a police delegation joined the meeting to push for quick recruitment through changes to the Police Regulation rules.
“We discussed how to remove the obstacles in the recruitment process. The ASI and other ongoing police appointments will now proceed faster,” he said.
“We’re trying to issue the order [on Wednesday]. Earlier, there were some procedural bottlenecks, but those won’t exist anymore. After consulting with the finance ministry and others, we’ve created these posts.”
“The election is coming. The police are the key force on the ground during polls. That’s why we sat together to resolve everything in one go. Besides ASIs, recruitment at the constable level will also continue as needed,” he added.
