A man claiming to be the coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement (AdSM) in Sylhet’s Osmaninagar has been handed down a two-month jail term for obstructing government work and threatening officials.
Mahbubur Rahman, 32, was detained on Monday after reportedly threatening officials, including the assistant commissioner (land), and disrupting administrative duties.
The mobile court, led by Osmaninagar Upazila Nirbahi (executive) Officer (UNO) Zainal Abedin, handed down the sentence shortly after his arrest.
“Mahbubur had been introducing himself as a Jamaat-e-Islami leader and a coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement,” the UNO said.
“He repeatedly threatened officials, demanding they meet his terms or face office blockades and vandalism. On Monday, he returned to issue fresh threats, prompting immediate action.”
Mahbubur is a resident of Sadeepur village under Sadeepur Union in the Upazila. Following the sentencing, he was handed over to Osmaninagar police.
Akhtar Hossain, the Sylhet district AdSM coordinator, denied any association with Mahbubur.
“We have no committee in Osmaninagar. His claim is fake. We demand legal action against him,” he said.
Efforts to reach Osmaninagar Jamaat-e-Islami secretary Anhar Ahmed for comment were unsuccessful.
Osmaninagar police chief Monayem Mia confirmed the convicted youth was sent to jail later in the day.
