A clash between the student wings of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami has broken out at Chattogram Government City College campus over graffiti and subsequent social media posts, leaving at least 10 people injured.
According to witnesses and party activists, the incident occurred outside the college on Tuesday afternoon.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Hossain Mohammad Kabir Bhuiyan said, “Tension arose between the two sides. Police are present at the scene and have dispersed both groups. The situation has returned to normal.”
Witnesses said Islami Chhatra Shibir members had drawn graffiti inside the campus, which later triggered online exchanges between Shibir and Chhatra Dal activists.
The situation reportedly escalated into scuffles on campus in the morning.
In protest of the morning incident, Shibir called a demonstration at New Market intersection around 4pm.
As their procession moved towards the college, the two sides clashed again, leading to chases and stone-throwing.
Panic spread in the area, forcing shops to shut and disrupting traffic movement.
Both sides have blamed each other for the violence.
Shibir leaders claimed that Chhatra Dal activists defaced their graffiti with “provocative writing”, which led to online protests.
Chattogram city (South) Islami Chhatra Shibir Publicity Secretary Jahidul Alam Joy told bdnews24.com, “We had drawn some graffiti at the college. Chhatra Dal later wrote provocative comments on them and damaged them.”
“Our fellows protested online. In the morning, when our activists went to the campus, they were attacked without any provocation.”
He added that they later organised a protest march in the afternoon, during which they were attacked again.
Joy claimed at least five Shibir activists were injured.
Meanwhile, Chattogram city Chhatra Dal member secretary Shariful Islam Tuhin said the spat over Facebook posts could have been resolved by the college authorities.
He alleged that Shibir “pre-planned” the attack by gathering people and bringing outsiders to assault Chhatra Dal activists, leaving several of their members injured.
