The Fire Service has found no evidence of sabotage behind the fire at the Aminbazar substation of the Power Grid Company on the outskirts of Dhaka.
Although the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, Fire Service Deputy Director Saleh Uddin said that their preliminary investigation did not point to any foul play.
"A committee will be formed to look into the origin of the fire and assess the damage as there are several technical aspects involved," he said.
Firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the fire around 7:15am on Tuesday. After nearly two hours of efforts, nine firefighting units managed to take control of the situation at 9:15am.
Earlier, Madhab Chandra Saha, the substation's executive engineer, told bdnews24.com: “One of our transformers caught fire. We're experiencing a little difficulty. However, we have managed to keep the power supply running so far.”
After the fire was contained, Fire Service official Saleh Uddin said: "The fire was limited to a single transformer, which has been completely burnt."
"Transformers contain a significant amount of oil, which initially made the fire appear more intense. However, our team effectively used water and foam-based techniques to extinguish the fire."
The Fire Service's priority was to isolate the burning transformer to prevent the fire from spreading, according to him.
Despite the fire, there was no major disruption to power supply.
"The power station authorities informed us that they have backup transformers in place, allowing them to maintain electricity supply," said Saleh.
