Police have arrested Ariful Islam Joarder Titu, assistant professor at the Cardiology Department of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), on charges of vandalising and setting fire to a car during the July Uprising.
Shahbagh Police chief Md Khalid Mansur said he was arrested at his workplace on Tuesday.
When Titu went to his workplace, other doctors surrounded him on charges of financing the Awami League, which is banned from all sorts of political activities.
Officer Mansur said, “We interrogated him and found his involvement in vandalising and burning cars during the July Uprising. Later, he was arrested and sent to court.”
The BMU administration has filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station on Jan 14 against teachers, doctors, nurses, officials, and employees supported by the pro-Awami League doctors’ organisation Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad (SWACHIP) for attacking the Anti-discrimination Student Movement during the mass uprising last year.
According to case documents, the then Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), backed by the Awami League, was accused of attacking the student protesters while they were holding a demonstration at Shahbagh intersection on Aug 4, 2024.
It also said teachers, doctors, officials, nurses, and other university employees, including SWACHIP members, threw bricks and stones at student protesters while shouting “Joy Bangla”.
Video footage reportedly shows several protesters sustaining serious injuries as a result.
The suspects have also been charged with vandalising and setting fire to hospital property and public vehicles on the university campus at the time.
When Titu was produced in court, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia ordered that he be sent to jail.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Jinnat Ali from the prosecution division confirmed the court order.
Investigation officer SI Mainul Islam Khan Pulak of Shahbagh Police presented Titu before the court and sought his detention in jail.
Lawyer Sohag Mia argued for bail on his behalf.
