The interim government has decided to train 150,000 police personnel and carry out administrative reshuffles wherever necessary ahead of the 13th parliamentary polls.
The decision came in a two-hour meeting chaired by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Monday, according to Yunus’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
The meeting discussed security measures and inter-agency coordination for the election, he added.
Shafiqul said the meeting emphasised stronger coordination between the Army, police, and civil administration at both the national and local levels.
Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Religious Affairs Advisor AFM Khalid Hossain, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor on Home Affairs Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, Principal Secretary M Siraj Uddin Mia, Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, Home Secretary Nasimul Gani, and Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division Lt Gen Kamrul Hassan were also in attendance.
Baharul outlined the police’s poll preparedness plan, confirming a three-month training programme from September to November. The initiative aims to ensure law enforcers are equipped to handle election-related duties effectively.
Shafiqul noted concerns about growing disinformation ahead of the polls and said a National Data Center will be activated to swiftly counter misinformation.
The police have also established a new central command structure, including a media centre, to provide timely law and order updates. Daily press briefings are planned to keep journalists informed of developments across the country, he said.
He added that Yunus stressed the importance of such a media unit, noting that police actions often go unnoticed due to a lack of structured communication.
Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said the Army will deploy 60,000 troops as a strike force during the elections. Administrative transfers will be made only where required, not across the board, he added.
Extra security measures will be implemented in high-risk constituencies, according to Azad.
