At least 10 people have died over a period of 24 hours from measles and related symptoms, as the outbreak of the highly contagious disease continues to spread across Bangladesh.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), four patients died from confirmed measles, while six others died showing symptoms of the disease in the 24 hours leading up to 8am Sunday.
According to the health directorate’s daily measles bulletin, since Mar 15, the confirmed death toll from measles has reached 28.
Dhaka has recorded the highest number of fatalities with 15 deaths, followed by Barishal with five.
Three deaths each were recorded in Chattogram and Rajshahi divisions, while two occurred in Mymensingh.
During the same period, the total number of deaths with measles-like symptoms has reached 151.
Among them, the highest 64 deaths were recorded in Dhaka Division, followed by 62 in Rajshahi Division.
In the last 24 hours, 150 new cases were confirmed, while 1,268 people arrived at hospitals with symptoms.
Out of these, 762 were admitted for treatment. Dhaka’s hospitals saw the highest pressure with 357 new admissions, whereas Rangpur reported the lowest with 11.
Since the outbreak began, the number of symptomatic patients seeking hospital care has climbed to 10,225, with 2,639 cases officially confirmed as measles.
