Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries in the crash of an Air India jet near Ahmedabad.
In a message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, he said: “I am shocked to learn of the tragic crash of an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner carrying 242 passengers in Ahmedabad.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to all the families who lost their dear ones at this tragic incident.”
He added, “At this trying hour, our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their loved ones.”
“We stand in solidarity with the people and government of India, and offer our full support in any form.”
The Air India plane crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, local time. It was en route to London.
The airline confirmed that the Dreamliner was carrying 232 passengers and 10 crew members.
Among the passengers were 53 British nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese citizens. The rest were Indians.
A video circulating on social media shows the aircraft flying at low altitude, seemingly unable to gain height, before crashing to the ground and erupting in flames.
The plane went down near the Ahmedabad BJ Medical College hostel.
Indian media report that at least five hostel students were among the dead.
