Metro rail service resumes after 'technical glitch' halts train at Farmgate

The power supply to one of the coaches of a Motijheel-bound train failed, causing the lights and AC system to shut down

Metro rail service has returned to normal after a disruption caused by a Motijheel-bound train stalling at Farmgate station, briefly stranding passengers.

The incident occurred around 9:30am on Monday, when the power supply to one of the train's coaches failed, causing the lights and air-conditioning system to shut down.

Some passengers disembarked during the stoppage.

Md Ahsanullah Sharifi, deputy project director and public relations officer of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), said that a "mechanical fault" had caused the interruption.

“However, the train started running after a few minutes. People with technical expertise will be able to say what kind of mechanical issue there was," he added.

A passenger, Fahim Faraiji, described his experience in a post to a Facebook group named “Metrorail Passenger Community".

“I had posted a few days ago that the train from Uttara to Motijheel, after passing Bijoy Sarani station, braked for a few milliseconds and then started moving again,” he wrote.

“This caused the train to suddenly jolt. And the passengers bumped into each other. The AC turned off and the train's lights went off.”

Faraiji added that many users commented on the post saying they had witnessed similar problems.

Referring to a video of Monday's incident, which shows passengers standing inside the train at Farmgate station, with no lights or air conditioning, he said: "I have no comment today. Listen to what the passengers are saying, turn up the sound.”
