A female journalist who filed a case over an alleged gang-rape in Dhaka’s Pallabi has expressed outrage as all of the suspects have not been named in the police chargesheet.
She said she plans to file a formal objection after police recommended dropping charges against 13 suspects.
Police submitted the chargesheet two months ago, naming only three suspects in the case and suggesting exemption for the others.
However, the investigation officer claimed that the complainant did not cooperate during the inquiry.
According to the case statement, the journalist learned in February that a criminal ring operating in Matikata was luring men and women, assaulting them, and recording explicit videos to extort money.
When she went there around 11pm on Mar 17 to verify the allegations, 16 men allegedly surrounded her, beat her, and sexually assaulted her after taking her to Pallabi’s “Garden Green City” building.
The men reportedly detained and raped her until around 1am. When she tried to flee, they caught and assaulted her again before locals rescued her after hearing her screams.
She later filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, naming eight people and accusing a total of 16.
Two of the suspects, Enamul Haque and Hamidur Rahman, were arrested and are currently in jail. Enamul reportedly gave a confessional statement in court.
On Sept 30, six months after the incident, Inspector Amena Khatun of the Tejgaon Women Support and Investigation Division submitted the charge sheet against three individuals: Enamul Haque, caretaker of Green City Garden, Shahin Chowdhury, and Mahmudul Hasan.
However, 13 others, including another caretaker Hamidur Rahman, Yasin, Habib, Anu, and a man known as “Chhoto Yasin,” were recommended for exemption.
Investigation officer Amena said, “After receiving the case, I tried to contact the complainant, but she asked us not to reach out. She did not answer calls. If she had cooperated, the investigation could have been more thorough.”
The journalist, however, denied this claim.
“The investigator never contacted me or spoke to me. She submitted the charge sheet on her own terms. I will file a formal objection to it,” she said.
The chargesheet also mentioned that despite conducting multiple raids, police could not arrest all suspects as their correct identities and addresses could not be verified.
Enamul’s lawyer, Tariq Hasan, said: “Many were accused in this case without evidence. Although Enamul gave a confessional statement, a review of it clearly shows he was not involved.”
“Locals, miscreants, and influential people carried out the crime and falsely implicated him. We will continue to fight this case legally.”
