Amid a spike in violent incidents, Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said the interim government is responding to such acts “immediately”.
Speaking at the Mill Barrack facility on Saturday, he said all election-related preparations will be completed by December, though the Election Commission has yet to announce a polling date.
Highlighting the brutal killing of a scrap metal trader, who was bludgeoned to death in front of Mitford Hospital last Wednesday, he said: “It was a horrific incident.”
The victim, Md Sohag alias Lal Chand, was killed in broad daylight, smashed with a concrete boulder. Graphic footage of the attack circulated widely on social media, prompting fierce criticism.
Authorities have since arrested five suspects -- two detained by RAB, two by Dhaka police, and one on Saturday, he said, adding that two of them are now in remand.
The BNP said five activists of its affiliated organisations -- Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal -- have been expelled over the incident.
“We’ve become very intolerant. Every section of society must step forward to stop this,” he said.
“Our DB [Detective Branch] teams have already been deployed in different places to bring the others [involved in the killing] under the law.”
He also referred to other recent acts of violence, including the machete attack on a cleric inside a mosque in Chandpur after Friday prayers, and the killing of a former opposition leader in Khulna.
In response to a bomb threat made during a flight to Kathmandu, Jahangir said the caller and two accomplices had already been detained.
“An incident occurred in Chandpur, which we’re trying to bring under the law. Then, a flight which was bound for Kathmandu on Friday… [a woman] called and said there was a bomb inside the plane.
“We’ve detained the one who made the call, and two others helped her, and we also caught them. We’re taking immediate action on whatever’s happening.”
While visiting the Dhaka Range Reserve Force unit in Gendaria on Saturday, the advisor noted that training programmes for law enforcement ahead of the election would begin at the Mill Barrack facility.
“The Election Commission will announce the date, but we expect to complete our preparations by December.”
“We have an approximate timeframe. Our preparations, whatever those are, will be done by December.”
