Govt appoints 5 more prosecutors to International Crimes Tribunal

Five prosecutors have been appointed under section 7 (1) of the International Crimes Tribunal Act 1973 to run the cases in the tribunal until further notice, a law ministry notice said

The government has appointed five more prosecutors to the International Crimes Tribunal.

The Solicitor Wing of the law ministry issued a notice in this regard on Thursday.

A total of 11 legal counsels, including the chief prosecutor, have been appointed to the team.

Five prosecutors have been appointed as per section 7 (1) of the International Crimes Tribunal Act 1973 to run the cases in the tribunal until further notice, the circular said.

The newly appointed prosecutors are Supreme Court lawyers SM Moeenul Karim, Md Nure Ershad Siddique, Shaikh Mahdi, Tarek Abdullah and forensic expert Tanveer Hasan Joha.

Among them, Karim and Siddique will enjoy the position and benefits of deputy attorney general and the other three of assistant attorney general. The order will be effective immediately, the notice said.

Previously, the government appointed Mohammad Tajul Islam as chief prosecutor and another five prosecutors. These prosecutors are Md Mizanul Islam, Gazi Monawar Hussain Tamim, BM Sultan Mahmud, Abdullah Al Noman and Md Saimum Reza Talukdar.

The first five, including the chief prosecutor, were appointed on Sept 5 while Talukdar was appointed on Oct 7.

A reformed International Crimes Tribunal has begun to try cases filed over the massacre during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. It has issued arrest warrants against 46 people including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
