As the monsoon season draws to a close, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast that a low-pressure system will develop in the northwest Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours.
Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana said, “A low-pressure system has been predicted to form within 48 hours, but it is unlikely to have a significant impact. However, the low may prompt rain, which could ease the scorching heat.”
In its regular weather bulletin on Tuesday, the BMD says the axis of the monsoon runs through Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal to Assam across the northern parts of Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends up to the north Bay of Bengal.
The monsoon is less active over Bangladesh and is moderate in the north Bay of Bengal.
In the 24 hours from 9am on Tuesday, the forecast expects light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty winds in many places in the Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, some places in the Rajshahi and Chattogram divisions and one or two places in the Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions.
In addition, there may be moderate to heavy rainfall in some parts of the Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.
Day and night temperatures across the country are likely to remain largely unchanged.
Khulna saw the highest temperature in the country over the past 24 hours, recording a high of 36.5 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature was in Bandarban at 24.6 degrees Celsius.
Panchagarh’s Tentulia saw the most rain, recording 37mm over the period.
