What began as an ordinary afternoon of simmering rice and routine errands has ended in tragedy in Narayanganj, as a mother’s call for her child went unanswered -- and she found her daughter lifeless outside a neighbour’s doorstep.
Overcome with grief, the mother wept uncontrollably.
“My child… she didn’t even have lunch at noon. Someone killed her. I have washed dishes and carried her in my hands, yet now she’s gone. Whoever did this, I want them hanged,” she sobbed, before fainting.
The fifth-grade student had gone missing around 4pm on Sunday from her home. Police recovered her body on Monday morning, lying beside the plastic bag she had carried to fetch lunch.
The family resides in Ward 20, Dori Sonakanda of Narayanganj City Corporation. Her mother works as a domestic helper, and her father is a rickshaw puller. The couple has lived in the area’s rented house for over a decade and has another daughter aged eight.
Her father recounted that upon returning home from the garage in the afternoon, he discovered his daughter missing. Despite searching until 3:30am and making announcements through local mosques, they could not locate her.
Police, acting on information from locals, recovered the body and sent it to Narayanganj General Hospital for postmortem, said Bandar Police chief Golam Mukhtar Ashraf.
“The body was found outside another rented house behind the family home. Initial examination shows injuries to her face and other signs suggesting sexual assault prior to death,” he added.
Following the postmortem, Dr Jahirul Islam, resident medical officer, confirmed injuries on the child’s cheeks and neck, resembling fingernail marks. Evidence to ascertain sexual assault was collected, with detailed findings pending the final report.
Neighbours in Dori Sonakanda expressed grief and called for exemplary justice against the perpetrators. The house owner in front of whose door the body was found had not seen the child during morning prayers but discovered her upon returning.
Family members identified the body on the spot. The owner has been taken to the police station for questioning.
Residents told bdnews24.com that drug dealers and users roam the area freely. Former city women councillor Shiuli Nowshad suspected links to drug addicts, emphasising that no ordinary person could commit such a heinous act. CCTV cameras do not cover the area, making identification of the killers difficult.
The child had been privately tutored by Sultana Raziya and had recently taken her fifth-grade annual exam, with results due on Dec 30. Her tragic death shocked teachers and neighbours alike.
Bandar Police confirmed that preparations are underway to file a murder case.
