Metro rail service along the entire line has resumed after an extended pause following the death of a pedestrian due to a fallen bearing pad from the elevated track in Farmgate.

The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited, which operates the metro rail, said that train services from Uttara to Motijheel resumed at 11am on Monday.

DMTCL Additional Project Director Rezaur Rahman Akand told bdnews24.com, “Train services were suspended on the Agargaon to Shahbagh section since yesterday, and a trial run was conducted on this section in the morning.

“Since then, the trains are running along the entire route in full swing from 11am.”

A man named Abul Kalam died when a bearing pad from the elevated rail fell onto him around 12:15pm on Sunday. Metro rail service was suspended immediately after the incident.

After that, trains ran on the Agargaon-Uttara section from the afternoon and along the Shahbagh-Motijheel section in the evening. However, train services from Agargaon to Shahbagh were suspended following the accident.

On Sept 18 last year, train services were suspended in the same area due to another bearing pad falling off the structure. However, no one was killed.

Elastomeric bearing pads, installed at pier and viaduct junctions to absorb vibrations, are made of neoprene or natural rubber. Some contain multiple internal steel layers and are extremely heavy.

Alongside the death of a pedestrian, the falling bearing pad also damaged a tea stall nearby, witnesses said.

The government has assured the victim’s family that they will receive Tk 500,000 cash. The metro rail will also offer a job to a member of the family. The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges has also announced the formation of a five-member committee to investigate the accident.
