United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres says he fully supports and stands in solidarity with Bangladesh’s ongoing democratic transition and reform initiatives, according to state news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
He made the remarks after meeting a delegation led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.
Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain, National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman, Principal Secretary Siraj Uddin Miah and SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed were also part of the delegation.
A wide range of issues, including political reforms, preparations for the February general election, accountability for the atrocities committed during the July Uprising, global trade concerns, and the International Rohingya Conference on Wednesday were discussed at the meeting.
Yunus briefed Guterres on the reform initiatives taken by the interim government and its commitment to free, fair, and peaceful polls.
"The next few months will be crucial. We need your support for the election," he said, claiming that the ousted regime and its allies were funding disinformation campaigns with stolen assets to try and destabilise the country before the polls.
“They do not want an election in February. Certain international quarters are backing them.”
The UN secretary-general reaffirmed strong support for the election and reforms while reiterating its commitment to advocating for a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.
He also praised the chief advisor for his leadership of the country over the past 14 months.
Yunus expressed his gratitude to Guterres for convening the International Rohingya Conference, saying it would play a “critical role” in spotlighting the crisis and mobilise funding for essential humanitarian responses in the refugee camps.
