A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified, with the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) warning it may develop into a cyclone by Sunday.
The system has remained over the same area while moving west-northwest on Saturday evening.
Meteorologist Md Omar Faruk told bdnews24.com on Saturday night, “The depression could turn into a deep depression by midnight. By Sunday afternoon, it may intensify into a cyclone.”
He said the cyclone is unlikely to have a significant impact on Bangladesh.
“Its effects over the sea will be minimal, but the western regions of the country may see scattered rainfall due to its influence on land,” he added.
According to a BMD special bulletin, at 6pm Saturday, the system was located 1,330km south of Chattogram Port, 1,255km south of Cox’s Bazar Port, 1,305km south of Mongla Port, and 1,265km south of Payra Port.
The forecaster noted that winds near the depression’s centre are blowing at 40 kmph, rising to 50 kmph in gusts, with the sea rough nearby.
The system is moving west-northwest, gaining strength, and may intensify into a cyclone. If it does, it will be named “Montha”, a name contributed by Thailand, meaning “beautiful flower”.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has pre-assigned names for cyclones in the North Indian Ocean.
A 13-country panel, including Bangladesh, India, Iran, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, UAE, and Yemen, decides the names sequentially.
Ports in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist Distant Cautionary Signal No. 1 while northern Bay vessels operate cautiously near the coast.
