Platforms Gallery has organised a Tehzib Art Workshop open to art enthusiasts and the wider public, inviting them to experience the intricate beauty of the traditional art of illumination through a guided, hands-on session.
The event was held on Mar 7, from 11am to 3pm, at Platforms Gallery in Dhaka’s Gulshan.
Participants registered through the Platforms website to take part in the event, where they explored the delicate techniques of Tehzib and created their own hand-painted coaster using traditional design elements.
The materials for the session were provided by Platforms.
Artist Abu Saleh Musa, who has been practising and researching Tezhib art for the past five years, facilitated the workshop. He introduced participants to the fundamentals of the art form, including pattern development, linework, and decorative techniques inspired by classical illumination traditions.
Tehzib is a traditional form of decorative illumination art that originated in the Islamic world and is widely known for its intricate floral patterns, geometric designs, and the use of gold and vibrant colours, Platforms said in a press release. Historically, Tezhib has been used to ornament manuscripts, particularly the Holy Quran and important literary texts.
“The art form requires patience, precision, and a deep understanding of pattern and symmetry,” Platforms said.
Sultan M Mineuddin, head of business operations at Platforms Gallery, is curating the workshop as “part of the gallery’s ongoing initiative to create accessible learning platforms for artists, students, and art enthusiasts.”
