Shakib scored 38 off 30 and picked crucial wickets to help Bangladesh seal the series-levelling win against Sri Lanka on Thursday. He was adjudged Man-of-the-Match at Colombo.
After receiving the award, the allrounder said, "He (Mashrafe) was very special in our dressing room. I knew him before I started playing cricket. We are from the same place."
"I don't have words to say how important a part he was of the team," he added.
Wishing Mashrafe well for the future, Shakib said, "He is still the captain of the One-Day squad. He will play a big role there in the future."
Shakib is the likely replacement of Mashrafe as the captain of T20 team.
