The students of the colleges that have been recently affiliated with the University of Dhaka started demonstrating on Thursday demanding announcement of exam schedules.
They blocked the road halting traffic when the police lobbed tear gas shells and charged batons to disperse the demonstrators.
At least 12 students have been detained from the demonstration.
Deputy Commissioner of police's Ramna Zone Maruf Hossain said around 12:30pm that the road was now cleared.
"Some students had blocked the road, but we removed the move. The situation is now normal," he told bdnews24.com.
Students of the Dhaka College, Eden Women's College, Badrunnesa College, Government Titumir College, Nazrul Islam College, Shahid Suhrawardy College and Mirpur Bangla College are taking part in the demonstration.
The colleges, which had been affiliated with the National University, were brought under the University of Dhaka in February this year.
The demonstrations blocked the road from Shahbagh and led to heavy traffic up to the Science Laboratory intersection.
Police used tear gas and their batons on the protesters, the students said.
Protesters had blocked the road and tried to move towards the Katabon area, Shahbagh police's Inspector Jafar Ali.
Twelve students have been held from the demonstration, he added.
The students had been given permission to hold a peaceful protest, said Shahbagh police OC Abul Hassan. “But they began vandalising cars…so we used some tear gas shells and detained a few.”
“We ended our protest peacefully in front of the National Museum in Shahbagh around 10am,” said Atiqul Islam, one of the protest organizers. “As we were leaving some of the protesters blocked the road near Katabon and vandalised a few cars.”
