Risky Road Crossing

Babu Bazar Bridge: Crossing on the edge
Babu Bazar Bridge: Crossing on the edge

The Babu Bazar Bridge, a vital artery linking Old Dhaka to Mawa via Keraniganj, has become a daily ordeal. Buses stop for long stretches to pick up passengers, battery-powered rickshaws crowd the lanes, and pedestrians risk their lives crossing in the middle of traffic. Despite signs and stairways, the bridge is a tangle of congestion and danger.

Pedestrians are restricted from walking on or crossing flyovers because traffic on them usually moves at high speeds. Despite the law, people still decide to take on the risk. Any of these crossings could lead to deadly accidents.

The lack of awareness about mobile phone use is evident across Bangladesh as people routinely cross roads while talking or looking at their phones.

In Dhaka’s bustling Mohakhali, many people risk their lives by crossing over the road divider. Sliding through the gaps of the iron fencing atop the divider is a regular scene in the area. Yet, just a few yards away stands a foot overbridge.

Many lives are lost every day in road accidents, yet public awareness remains low. People often dash before moving vehicles or squeeze in between the narrow gaps between two buses, just to save some time.

Pedestrians often choose to climb the base of a footbridge pier rather than using the designated overhead structure to cross the street at Shankar in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi. Such risky behaviour could lead to serious accidents at any moment.
