Old Dhaka monkeys battle heatwave

As Baishakh heatwave intensifies over Old Dhaka, not only humans but the city’s monkeys are feeling the strain, seeking refuge in shade and whatever relief they can find. Locals give cucumbers, watermelons, ripe bananas, and cold water to the monkeys scattered around Sadhana Pharmacy and the nearby graveyard in Gandaria.

Urban intruders in search of food

Once common in Old Dhaka’s Wari, monkeys have declined due to urbanisation shrinking their natural habitat. Those that remain often struggle to find food, pushing them into neighbourhoods in search of scraps.

Monkeys are using a footbridge to cross the street, often unnoticed by pedestrians, in Dhaka. Monkeys frequently traverse the road by walking over the canopy of the footbridge outside BAF Shaheen College in Dhaka.
