Dhaka, Feb 15 (BDNEWS) – As Abahani Limited opened a condolence book, people from different walks of life paid rich tributes to Monem Munna, one of the finest footballers the country has ever produced.
The list of homage payers included his compatriots, seniors, juniors, politicians, organisers, journalists and his fans
"Monem Munna was simply the best in Bangladesh Football," wrote Tipu, a current booter of Abahani.
Abahani football team captain Joy wrote: At his death the nation lost not only a footballer but also the football of the nation lost a great artiste of football.
Opposition Leader Sheikh Hasina was the first to put her condolence on the book with black cover.
"He was like my younger brother," she said.
"Munna inspired the national team to play modern football. The nation lost a devoted sports organiser," wrote Sheikh Hasina recalling his glorious role of Munna as a footballer and as an organiser.
The condolence book will remain open for all till Saturday next.
Arif, a student from Chittagong College said: Munna bhai, your absence is not recoverable.
A prominent football player, Shishu wrote, "I pray to the almighty that his next life becomes glorious like his football career."
Sheikh Mohammad Aslam, Munna's long-time team mate in the Abahani Club and in the national squad, recalled as to how he (Munna) had inspired him to score.
"I never saw a defiant man like him to tell the truth. Strong believe about thyself made him a legendary footballer," wrote Aminul Islam, an assistant secretary of a sub-committee of Awami League.
Sport Journalist Al Musabbir Sadi wrote: He was the last star in Bangladesh football whose performance brought the crowd to the ground. The power of giving the lead made him extraordinary.
Rezaul Karim Ratan, a government service holder said Munna will live in our mind forever.
Wrote Zahid Rahman: Munna is all times great. There is no death of the greats. He will live in our hearts.
