Inqilab had most govt ads under BNP: Azad

The Bangla-language daily Inqilab got the most government advertisements during the past BNP-led rule, the information minister told parliament on Thursday.

Dhaka, Feb 5 (bdnews24.com) – The Bangla-language daily Inqilab got the most government advertisements during the past BNP-led rule, the information minister told parliament on Thursday.
"The newspaper received Tk 7.875 crore out of the total Tk 129.75 crore spent by the government on advertisements between 2001-6," Abul Kalam Azad said.
In reply to a question by Shahiduzzaman Sarkar MP, the minister said, "The then government followed the 1987 advertisement policy during the period."
Statistics placed before the House showed that Inqilab received 945 ads worth Tk 7.875 crore followed by Dinkal netting nearly Tk 6.65 crore and Ittefaq with about Tk 5.88 crore. Jamaat-e-Islami mouthpiece Sangram got Tk 5.30 crore in that period.
Among other papers, Manav Jamin got Tk 4.67 crore, Jugantor Tk 4.22 crore, Prothom Alo Tk 2.32 crore and Bhorer Kagoj Tk 2.16 crore.
Among the English language dailies, News Today netted nearly Tk 2.35 crore in government ads, Daily Star 1.58 crore and the New Age about Tk 1.12 crore.
The information minister said the government distributes ads among 177 newspapers published from the capital and 243 from elsewhere in the country.
