Dhaka, Jan 18 (bdnews24.com) – The High Court granted two month's bail in a graft case to former MP HBM Iqbal on Sunday.
The bench of justices Mir Hasmat Ali and Shamim Hasnain also stayed Iqbal's conviction in the case.
"There is no case against me now and I can move about freely," he told bdnews24.com.
A special judge's court on March 11, 2008 sentenced the fugitive Iqbal to 13 years for accumulating illegal wealth to the amount of Tk 2 crore.
The Anticorruption Commission lodged the case with Gulshan police on June 25, 2007.
"The Anticorruption Commission lodged the case disregarding the law and the special judge's court passed a sentence on Iqbal in a manner that is beyond its jurisdiction," Iqbal's advocate barrister Shamsuddin Manik Chowdhury said in Sunday's hearing.
Iqbal surrendered to court on Sunday, in line with a HC order issued on Dec 18, appealing for bail.
Manik was aided by barrister Ziaul Hassan and advocate Murad Reza in the hearing.
The ACC was represented by senior advocate Khan Saifur Rahman.
