BNP chief Tarique Rahman has paid his respects at the grave of Abu Sayed, the first martyr of the July 2024 mass uprising.
Tarique began his party’s election campaign in Rangpur on Friday by visiting the grave in Pirgonj Upazila's Babonpur village. He travelled to the village from Bogura after Friday prayers.
Abu Sayed, a student of the Department of English at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, was shot dead by police on Jul 16, 2024.
Tarique arrived at the Babanpur village at 6pm.
After visiting the grave, he spoke with members of Abu Sayed’s family.
BNP Standing Committee member AZM Zahid Hossain and local leaders were also present at the time.
Zahid recalled the role the sacrifice and bravery of Abu Sayed played in shaping the future of Bangladesh by throwing the Awami League government out of power.
“He taught how to confront tyranny and law enforcement with bravery. Through his sacrifice, the 15-year-long struggle of democratic parties reached its fulfilment,” he said.
“It is not enough to only mark Abu Sayed’s death anniversary or visit his grave. We must all be inspired to put the lessons of his sacrifice into practice,” said Zahid.
