Brahmanbaria-2 MP Rumeen Farhana has allegedly been prevented from laying a wreath at the Shaheed Minar in her constituency during the first watch of Language Martyrs' Day.
The incident occurred at the Sarail Upazila Shaheed Minar premises around 11:45pm on Friday when a group of BNP activists allegedly shredded her floral tribute.
As tensions flared, the lawmaker was forced to leave the monument under a security escort provided by her own supporters.
Video footage shows Rumeen arriving at the monument shortly before midnight to honour the language martyrs.
As she stood before the altar with her floral wreath, a faction of party activists, reportedly led by former Sarail Upazila BNP General Secretary Anwar Hossain, began shouting slogans against her.
The confrontation quickly turned physical, resulting in the destruction of the wreath.
Police eventually intervened to restore order, but Rumeen was unable to complete the ceremony.
Following the scuffle, her supporters moved to the Shahbazpur First Gate area and Islampur in Bijoynagar, where they blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway for nearly an hour.
The protesters lit fires on the road and called for immediate legal action against those involved in the assault.
Rumeen described the attack as a “pre-planned” strike, noting that there was a deliberate attempt to push her down.
She said everything is captured clearly in the video evidence.
The lawmaker cautioned that if the BNP, having returned to state responsibilities after 17 years, cannot rein in its local grassroots, the consequences will be “disastrous”.
She urged the party’s high command to take disciplinary measures against those using their official positions to incite such violence, warning that such actions damage both the party and the government's image.
bdnews24.com is seeking comment from Anwar over the allegations.
Sarail Police Station chief Monjur Kader Bhuiyan said the matter is being reviewed by examining video footage and legal steps will follow.
