Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, JaSaD, President Hasanul Haq Inu has been placed on a four-day remand in connection with the killing of a man during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman issued the remand order on Monday in a case filed at the Gulshan Police Station in Dhaka.
Initially, police had sought a 10-day remand to question Inu. Meanwhile, Inu’s lawyer Shahinur Rahman petitioned to scrap the remand order. The court remanded Inu for four days after hearing both sides.
During the hearing, Shahinur told the court that Inu’s remand order was politically motivated.
“Inu has been accused and remanded to harass him for political reasons. We request that no remand order is given in this case.”
He also urged the court to consider alternative measures, such as interrogation at the jail gate.
According to the investigating officer, Inu is the 9th listed suspect in the murder case. As such, he had a role in the policy-making stage during the murder. He also said that a remand order for 10 days was necessary to uncover the truth in the case.
Meanwhile, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi said: “Inu is an accused in the case. Sheikh Hasina was able to carry out such a large-scale massacre with the encouragement of the leaders of the 14-Party Alliance like Inu. That is why I am seeking his remand.”
Per the case dossier, Md Bahadur Hossain Monir was shot while crossing the road on his way home on Jul 19 in Dhaka’s Pragati Sarani amid the mass uprising.
Later, he was rescued and taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
On Sept 30, the deceased’s father Md Abu Zafar filed a case at the Gulshan Police Station, naming as many as 105 people, including the former prime minister, as suspects in the case. Another 200 to 300 people were also named as unidentified suspects
