BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for national unity in light of recent events following the fall of the Awami League government.
In addition, the BNP leader has also urged the interim government to expedite necessary reforms to establish a roadmap for swift elections.
On Wednesday, a delegation of the BNP, led by Fakhrul, held talks with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse Jamuna amid recent political turmoil.
The five-member team includes standing committee members Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Salahuddin Ahmed.
The delegation arrived at Jamuna at 6pm to discuss the unfolding political situation and explore resolutions under the interim government.
Emphasising that national unity is the “biggest need” of the hour, the secretary general said: “During the meeting with the chief advisor, we told him that what we need most is an election. This is very urgent.”
“I have conveyed the party’s concerns regarding the recent situation, especially the law-and-order situation, the ISKCON situation, and the problems associated with students of some colleges to the chief advisor.”
He added: “We hope that the chief advisor, along with his Advisory Council, will find a quick and peaceful solution to these problems so that there are no situations that will lead to division in the country.”
"The biggest need at the moment is national unity. There are many big challenges ahead of us. And to face those challenges, especially those that pose a threat to the independence and sovereignty of Bangladesh, or those who want to destroy the stability of the country, we must build national unity.”
During the meeting, discussions were held on the public's suffering due to the country's commodity price situation, increasing the sale of daily necessities in area-based TCB trucks, maintaining normal vehicle movement across the country and the supply of fertilizers in agriculture, said Fakhrul.
He added that the delegation also discussed regular salaries and allowances of workers in industrial areas, the prompt withdrawal of all false cases filed against the BNP, and other opposition parties during the rule of the deposed Awami League government.
Fakhrul stated that the delegation urged Yunus to dissolve Union Parishads trade bodies through transparent electoral processes.
"The chief advisor has listened to our statements carefully. We believe that he will take these issues seriously and take action."
