“Mob justice” in Bangladesh has morphed into a dangerous frenzy, BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said, calling it a “threat to humanity”.
In a message marking the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on Wednesday, he said although the country is no longer under “fascist rule”, genuine democratic practice is yet to take hold.
He believes the current environment has given rise to a “mob-driven rage” that risks undermining social order and justice.
Tarique urged pro-democracy groups to remain united, saying the country must avoid slipping back into “a one-party system”.
He called for a renewed national commitment to humanity, justice, rule of law, and electoral integrity.
The BNP leader accused the Awami League government of turning Bangladesh into an “all-consuming authoritarian state” over the past 16 years, restricting fundamental rights and suppressing press freedom through “black laws”.
Tarique said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, whom he described as a “symbol of democracy”, was subjected to persecution during the “fascist” regime.
He alleged she was wrongfully imprisoned through “fabricated” charges and denied proper medical care by the Awami League government.
Tarique said the whole country was silenced and gripped by fear and anxiety. “Any protest against the undemocratic and intolerant actions of the fascist government was met with attacks by armed groups.”
He added that “state-sponsored criminals” established a culture of impunity, endangering the lives of ordinary people, including women and children.
Highlighting the significance of the UN-declared day, Tarique called for an end to the obstacles victims face in accessing justice.
He urged all democracy supporters worldwide, driven by humanity, to unite in defeating “ruthless torturers and autocratic rulers”.
