The BNP has announced a seat-sharing agreement with the Islamist party Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, under which the party will not contest four parliamentary constituencies in the upcoming general election.

The deal was announced at a media briefing in Dhaka on Tuesday by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Under the agreement, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam candidates will contest the seats of Nilphamari-1, Narayanganj-4, Sylhet-5 and Brahmanbaria-2. The candidates named are the party’s secretary general Manzurul Islam Afendi in Nilphamari, Monir Hossain Kasemi in Narayanganj, party president Obaidullah Faruq in Sylhet and Junaid Al Habib in Brahmanbaria.

The BNP has already announced candidates for 272 of the 300 parliamentary seats. Of the remaining constituencies, four have now been allocated to Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam as part of the alliance.

Fakhrul said the BNP would not field candidates in those seats and called on party supporters to back Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam nominees, who will contest using their own electoral symbol, the date palm tree.

“Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh will contest the upcoming election based on an understanding with the BNP. We congratulate them and extend our best wishes," he said.

He added that the party would not contest any constituencies beyond the four agreed seats.

The BNP leader urged party activists and voters in the affected areas to support the allied candidates.

“Voters in those constituencies should vote for the date palm tree symbol to strengthen the paddy sheaf,” he said, referring to the BNP’s election symbol.

Leaders from both parties were present at the briefing, including BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and senior figures from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.
