All but four committees of National Citizens' Committee dissolved

The group's spokesperson says it will remain a ‘civil-political platform’ after the launch of the political party

As part of the process to form a new political party, the National Citizens’ Committee has dissolved all its cells and branches, keeping only four key positions intact.

The decision was made during a general meeting held at the committee’s headquarters in Banglamotor on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the organisation.

The Anti-discrimination Student Movement, which led the protest to topple the Sheikh Hasina government, and the Citizens’ Committee, a group formed by the Movement and its supporters, are set to launch a new political party on Friday.

Earlier, in its 11th general meeting, the National Citizens Committee made several other key decisions.

The press release signed by the organisation’s Spokesperson Samantha Sharmin confirmed the dissolution of all leadership structures, executive committees, cells, and search committees.

However, the positions of coordinator, general secretary, spokesperson, and chief organiser will remain intact.

On Aug 5, 2024, the Awami League government was ousted.

Following this, on Sept 8, the National Citizens’ Committee was formed with the goal of restructuring the state, abolishing fascist systems, and successfully establishing the political framework of a “new Bangladesh”.

The committee was formed with Akhtar Hossain, the convenor of Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti, or Democratic Student Power, as general secretary.

Former Movement Convenor Sarjis Alam is the committee’s chief organiser.

Muhammad Nasiruddin Patwari, a member of the liaison committee of the Anti-discrimination Movement, was appointed as convenor.
