He passed away at the intensive care unit of the Square Hospital at 6:15pm on Wednesday, a doctor told bdnews24.com.
The senior journalist had been suffering from lung complications for a long time and received treatment in Singapore earlier.
He was put on life support for a few days.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith has condoled his untimely demise and extended sympathy to the grieving family.
“Moazzem Hossain was a strong voice in journalism. He was always fearless in publishing the truth. His death is an irreparable loss to the media industry,” Muhith said in a condolence message.
The National Press Club and Economic Reporters Forum have also mourned Moazzem Hossain.
He was the president of Economic Reporters Forum at its launch in 1992.
He left behind his wife, a son, a daughter, a host of relatives, friends and well-wishers.
The veteran journalist will be buried at Azimpur Graveyard in Dhaka after Zohr prayers on Thursday, according to the newspaper.
He was the publisher of The Financial Express on behalf of the newspaper’s owning company International Publications Limited or IPL. He was also the managing director of IPL.
Completing his graduation and post-graduation in economics in 1967 and 1968 respectively from Dhaka University, Moazzem started his career in journalism with the now defunct Bangladesh Observer as a reporter.
He also worked with The New Nation, the United News of Bangladesh or UNB, The Dhaka Courier, and The Daily Star.
After completion of his post-graduation, Moazzem worked with the Habib Bank Limited in Karachi as an officer in Training and Research Department and with the Ministry of Finance, Government of Pakistan in Islamabad as a research official.
He was a member of the management board of the Press Institute of Bangladesh or PIB from 1995 to 2001, and a member of the Board of Directors of the state news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha or BSS from 1997 to 2000.
He was a member of the Board of Directors of Janata Bank, a nationalised commercial bank, for two consecutive terms.
He was also a director of Securities Trading Company Limited, a subsidiary of the Investment Corporation of Bangladesh or ICB. He was also an independent director of Bay Leasing & Investment Ltd.
Moazzem Hossain was an independent director of Southeast Bank Limited.
On behalf of Dhaka University Economics Department Alumni Association, its President and the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed mourned the death of Moazzem, who was a vice-president of the association.
Among others, Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation Chairman Syed Mahmudul Huq condoled his passing.
