The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has appointed Prof Shaheen Akhter as the first director of the newly established Institute of Paediatric Neurodisorder and Autism (IPNA).

It is the first-ever institute of the BSMMU.
The institute was started in 2014 as a project of the health ministry with the support of WHO’s autism expert Saima Wazed Hossain - daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The institute had previously gone under the name of Centre for Neurodevelopment and Autism in Children (CNAC), established in 2010 and led by Prof Dr Shaheen Akhter, a paediatric neurologist.
The IPNA provides comprehensive services for autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities. It ensures a ‘safe environment for children with autism’ where they can learn to develop to their full potential.
Prof Akhter completed her MBBS from Dhaka Medical College and obtained MD from BSMMU, formerly IPGMR. She also obtained Clinical Fellowship Training from the Institute of Child Health, London, UK in 2001.
She has more than 20 years working experience in the paediatric neurology and neurodevelopmental disorder including autism.
Her main areas of research are epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders including cerebral palsy, autism, and ADHD – attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
