State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj has announced that the government will provide free school uniforms to all primary school students across Bangladesh.

Speaking at a dialogue in Dhaka on Monday, the state minister said the initiative follows a directive from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

"We have started working towards this goal. Students will receive free uniforms once a year," Bobby said.

"We believe that during the current government's tenure, we will be able to provide free uniforms to every primary school in the country in phases," he added.

The announcement was made during a dialogue titled Primary Education Reform: Strategic Guidelines, organised by BRAC’s education programme at the BRAC Centre in Mohakhali.

A subsequent media statement from the ministry confirmed the plans.

In addition to uniforms, the state minister expressed optimism about nutritional support for students.

“Midday meals have already been introduced in several primary schools. We hope to implement the midday meal programme in all primary schools by next year,” he said.

Addressing the quality of education, Bobby emphasised a "3-C" approach: Curriculum, Classroom, and Consistency.

He highlighted the need for significant infrastructure and environmental improvements in classrooms.

“There are many gaps in our primary education curriculum. I have visited several schools and observed that students in classes 4 and 5 often struggle to read from their textbooks,” the state minister said.

He called for an urgent review to ensure reading materials are age-appropriate and accessible.

“We need to see if the language used is suitable for them. I felt that the current texts are quite difficult. We must update the curriculum to make it more play-based and story-based at the primary and pre-primary levels to spark students' interest in learning.”

Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education Abu Noor Md Shamsuzzaman and Director General of the Bureau of Non-Formal Education Debabrata Chakraborty were also present at the event.
