Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman has congratulated the winners of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) elections.
He extended his greetings in a statement on Wednesday.
The party’s student front Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel won nine of the 12 secretary posts, with Abu Shadik Kayem as vice-president, SM Farhad as general secretary, and Md Mohiuddin Khan as assistant general secretary in Tuesday’s polls.
Candidates from their panel also won in the university's hall unions.
In his statement, Shafiqur said: "The students of the country's top educational institution, Dhaka University, participated in the central student union election in a festive and peaceful atmosphere. The candidates made the election competitive by participating in the polls.
"I extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who have been elected. I expect they will serve as representatives of the student community, rising above their party identities."
The Jamaat chief also congratulated the interim government, university authorities, security forces, journalists and everyone involved in conducting a fair election.
He also offered condolences to the family of journalist Tariqul Islam Shibli, who died after falling ill while covering the election.
