Bangladesh’s batting imploded under pressure to hand the West Indies a 16-run victory in the first T20I at Chattogram, leaving the Tigers staring at a 1-0 series deficit.
After posting 165 for 3, courtesy of a late onslaught by Shai Hope and Rovman Powell, Jayden Seales (3-32) and Akeal Hosein (2-22) clipped Bangladesh’s top order in the powerplay, and the hosts never truly recovered at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium on Monday.
The early collapse set the tone of the chase. By the sixth over, the Tigers were 42 for 4. Exploiting the shaky start, Jason Holder grabbed 3 for 31 as the Caribbeans bowled the hosts out for 149.
Earlier, Hope and Powell’s unbeaten 83-run stand for the fourth wicket, with Hope unbeaten on 46 and Powell on 44, turned what looked like a moderate total into a challenging target.
Nasum Ahmed’s disciplined spell kept the early batsmen quiet, conceding just 15 runs in four overs, but Bangladesh’s bowlers struggled to maintain pressure as Hope and Powell unleashed their fury in the final overs.
Taskin Ahmed (2-36) removed Brandon King (33) and Sherfane Rutherford (0), while Rishad Hossain (1-40) snared Alick Athanaze (34).
Powell’s towering sixes off Mustafizur Rahman (0-24) and Tanzim Hasan (0-47) propelled the visitors to a total Bangladesh would find daunting.
Chasing 166, Bangladesh started aggressively but quickly fell into disarray.
Tanzid Hasan (15) lasted just five balls before Romario Shepherd took a superb running catch. Litton Das (5), attempting a soft return shot, fell to Hosein, who then trapped Saif Hassan (8) trying to sweep. Shamim Hossain (1) followed, bowled by Holder, leaving Bangladesh with their tail exposed.
The middle- and lower-order tried to resist. Tanzim fought valiantly with 33 off 27, adding 40 runs with Nasum (20), but Holder’s sharp catch ended his innings.
Seales then dismissed Nasum in the penultimate over, before taking out Taskin (10) in the final over to seal the match. Bangladesh’s hopes of a strong chase never materialised, their fragile batting under pressure again proving costly.
