Although things tensed up in the middle over with Indian batsmen going for the big shots and holing out, Gill and Rahul, who survived once, completed the modest chase to start off their campaign with a good win.

Rishad lands another blow
Legspinner Rishad Hossain sent Axar Patel (8) back into the hutch after the batsman charged at the bowler only to sky the ball for a well-judged catch by the bowler himself, making the chase more interesting.
Axar, who was promoted to 5, was employed in a pinch-hitter's role. In his first over at the wicket, he tried to slog-sweep Rishad but took an inside edge, before cracking a boundary off Tanzim Hasan. But his next slog brought about his end.
KL Rahul was the new batter for India, who were 144 for 4 in 30.1 overs.

Mustafizur slower gets Iyer
Shreyas Iyer (15) looked in good touch when he played a very late cut off Mustafizur for a boundary, but the wily left-arm seamer exacted revenge with a slower in the next delivery.
The bat in Iyer’s hand turned as the mishit went straight to skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who took a good catch looking over his shoulder.
Shubman Gill was joined by Axar Patel in the middle as India reached 134 for 3 in 28 overs in their chase.

Kohli fails at legspin again
Virat Kohli was looking uncomfortable against the legspin of Rishad Hossain before the bowler tossed it outside off, luring the batsman to cut off the backfoot.
But Kohli failed to keep it down and was dismissed by legspin for the fifth time in five innings since 2024.
His 38-ball 22 contained just one boundary as India slumped to 112 for 2 in 23 overs, still needing 117 runs off 27 overs.

Shami grabs five as Tigers 228 all out
Mohammad Shami (5-53) bagged a superb five-wicket haul and muted any chance of Bangladesh looking to end things on an aggressive note.
The seamer added Tanzim Hasan (0) and Taskin Ahmed (3) to his scalps at the death to ensure that India chase a less-than-imposing target for their Champions Trophy opener.
Harshit Rana (3-31) then took out Hridoy (100 of 118 balls) to snuff out the Bangladesh innings.

Mushfiqur’s wicket put Axar on a hat-trick and the spinner even managed to draw an edge from Jaker Ali but skipper Rohit Sharma dropped a simple catch in the first slip to provide reprieve to the batting side.

No Shakib
The Tigers are featuring in an ICC event without allrounder Shakib Al Hasan for the first time since 2004. Bangladesh selectors also dropped top-order batsman Litton Das after a poor run of form in the format since the 2023 World Cup.
India, on the other hand, look set to force Bangladesh into a trial by spin. With five spinners in the squad, including three allrounders, India have plenty of seam options to employ against the Tigers as well.

Tigers bat first
Bangladesh have won the toss and opted to bat first against India in their Champions Trophy opener in Dubai.
The game is set to start at 3pm Bangladesh time at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
With Pakistan hosting the tournament, India are scheduled to play all their matches of the Champions Trophy, which returns to the calendar after eight years, in Dubai including the final should they make it.
Bangladesh fans will have their eyes on Tanzid Hasan at the top of the batting order.
The team played their last ODI in December 2024, losing a series 0-3 to the West Indies, who failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy.
Featuring in an allround imposing batting order, Shreyas Iyer has been a lynchpin in India’s lineup and can obliterate bowlers’ motivation.
