Students from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University are staging a road “blockade” programme in Dhaka’s Agargaon to push for a three-point list of demands.
On Thursday morning, students gathered under the banner of Krishibid Oikya Parishad (Agriculture Unity Council) and blocked the road.
At 1:45pm, university student and National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Ashiq Ahmed said: “The movement for engineering rights took to the streets with their three-point list of demands. Their movement has been attacked for these demands. We strongly condemn and protest this.
“At the same time, we are declaring our solidarity with their three-point list of demands. In order for the country to move forward in the future, it is necessary to resolve the problems in the agriculture sector.”

The agricultural students presented a three-point list of demands as well.
Their three points include:
>>Only allowing agronomists to receive the 10th grade (deputy assistant agricultural officer, deputy assistant scientific officer or equivalent) of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) and other research institutions.
>>No opportunity for promotion to the 9th grade (the scrapping of the BADC quota) except by passing a recruitment exam.
>>Issuing a government notice barring the use of the title “agronomist” to anyone who has not graduated in agriculture or in agriculture-related subjects.
Engineering students are also protesting for a three-point list of demands amid a dispute between engineers who have a Bachelor’s in Science in the subject and diploma holders.
On Wednesday, police baton charged the protesters in the capital.
On Thursday, the students are observing a “complete shutdown” programme at all engineering universities across the country.
