Students at Jahangirnagar University have begun casting their ballots in the long-awaited JUCSU elections.

Voting opened at 9am on Thursday across 21 residential halls as heavy rain swept the campus.

The weather dampened turnout at the halls, where students showed little urgency to vote, while those outside struggled in the downpour.

By midday, participation varied widely, with some halls reporting steady activity and others seeing only modest numbers.

At AFM Kamal Uddin Hall, Returning Officer Shibli Noman said 60 ballots had been cast by 12pm among the 333 voters at the hall.

In Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall, Provost Abdur Razzak reported 250 ballots were cast in the first three hours among the 992 voters at the hall.

Polling Officer Bashiruzzaman said that Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, which has 464 registered voters, had recorded 105 ballots by 12pm.

At Al Beruni Hall, Returning Officer Miraz Rahman Khan said 50 ballots from 210 potential voters had been cast by 12pm.

Meanwhile, Maulana Bhashani Hall reported a somewhat stronger turnout. Returning Officer Kazi Mohammad Mohsin said that of 514 registered voters, 170 had voted by 12:30pm.
