Opposition-backed panel sweeps Press Club polls

President Kamal Uddin Sabuj and General Secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed re-elected , will lead the press club for the next two years.

 The opposition-backed panel has again bagged the top positions of the National Press Club.

Kamal Uddin Sabuj of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha has been re-elected as President with Syed Abdal Ahmed of Amar Desh re-elected as General Secretary.

The biennial election was held between 9:30am and 5.30 pm on Saturday . The results were announced on Sunday.

Sabuj, vying for the top post, got 386 votes while his nearest rival Syed Akhter Yusuf bagged 176. On the other hand, Ahmed, running for the post of General Secretary, secured 356 votes with his nearest contender Abdur Rahman Khan getting 193.

In this election, 575 voters out of 629 had cast their votes.

The pro-BNP-Jamaat panel has bagged 11 of the 17 important positions, that of President, General Secretary, Senior Vice-President, Vice President and Treasurer.

The ruling party-backed panel secured victory in six positions -- that of Joint Secretary and five members positions.

From the opposition-backed panel, Kazi Rawnak Hossain has been elected as the Senior Vice-President, Bakhtiar Rana as Vice President, Badiul Alam as Treasurer and Kader Gani Chowdhury as Joint Secretary.

Mohammad Nurul Huda, Hasan Hafiz, Nuruddin Ahmed, Nurul Hasan Khan and Santa Maria have been elected as members from this panel.

Farida Yasmin from the ruling party-backed panel has been elected as the Joint Secretary and Parvin Sultana Musa Jhuma, Farid Hossain, Shamsuddin Ahmed Chari, Mainul Alam and Saiful Islam Shamim have secured members posts.

Kamal Uddin Sabuj had presided over Saturday's biennial general council of the National Press Club, held before the election.
