Dhaka, May 11 (bdnews24.com) —The government has appointed Supreme Court judge Mohammad Muzammel Hossain as the 20th chief justice of Bangladesh.
"A circular in this regard has been issued on Wednesday," the law ministry's public relations officer Mizanur Rahman told bdnews24.com.
His appointment will be in effect from May 18 to Jan 16, 2015, when he retires.
Current chief justice A B M Khairul Haque, who served just eight months after his appointment on Sept 26 last year, is going on mandatory retirement on May 17.
Born on Jan 17 1948, justice Muzammel obtained LLB from Dhaka University and started his career as a lawyer of district judge's court in 1971.
On completion of his master's degree from Sheffield University in the UK in 1977, he shifted to the High Court the following year.
He was appointed High Court justice in April 1998 and promoted to the Appellate Division in 2009.
Justice Muzammel's appointment superseded senior-most judge Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman.
Justice Khairul Haque had passed over justice Mohammad Abdul Matin and justice Abu Nayeem for the appointment.
According to the constitution, the last retired chief justice gets the first preference to become the chief advisor to the interim administration.
