Dhaka, Aug 25 (bdnews24.com)—The High Court has ordered arrest of Ibn Sina Trustee Board members, excluding the chairman, over the 'negligent death' of an infant at the Ibn Sina Hospital.
The court on Thursday asked the assistant commissioner of police (Dhanmondi zone) and Dhanmondi police OC to execute the order, deputy attorney general A B M Altaf Hossain told bdnews24.com
The nine-member Trustee Board include Jamaat-e-Islami leaders A N M A Zaher and Mir Quasem Ali. Zaheer is also the chairman of the Islami Bank.
The bench of justices A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Gobinda Chandra Tagore, that issued the arrest warrants, had on Aug 17 issued a rule on its own volition following a Baishakhi TV report aired on Aug 15 on the infant's death.
Responding to the rule, the two police officers and the parents of the child appeared in court.
The court had summonsed two physicians of the hospital and asked the police officers to explain within 12 days why steps should not be taken against the doctors for the death of the child.
It also had excused Trustee Board chairman Mujibur Rahman from court appearance.
"The chairman appealed to be excused from court appearance. He is 95. So we've excused him. It'll not be right to take steps against him," the court had said.
On Thursday, the court said, "Take legal steps against the authorities of the hospital. The authorities mean all members of the Trustee Board. And step means arrest. So, all of them will have to be arrested."
"Ibn Sina authorities are well-off. One of them is the chairman of the Islami Bank. Don't be sold to them. Prove that the police uniform is over everything," it told the police officers.
The High Court also ordered the Dhaka metropolitan police commissioner, assistant commissioner (Gulshan zone) and Gulshan police chief to provide security to Baishakhi TV reporter Mahbubul Alam Lavlu, who made the report.
Mohammadpur police were asked to see to the security of Idris Shikdar, the father.
Police were asked to take steps against assistant manager of Ibn Sina Hospital Sultan Mahmud for lodging a complaint against Idris on charges of mugging. Sultan was asked to appear in court on Oct 16.
Deputy manager (media and marketing) Tajul Islam have also been told to appear before court on the same day to defend charges that he had offered to bribe the reporter.
